Monthly Meetings/Demos
Our next meeting will be November 6th, 5:30 – 7pm. Textile artist Marty Ornish will speak on turning how to salvage worn or torn clothing by turning repairs into works of art. This demo will be followed by a 3 hour class on Sunday, November 16th from 10 am to 1 pm.
Marty Ornish (MartyO) is a Southern California fiber artist who transforms salvaged quilts, linens, found objects, and garments into textile and wearableart, soft sculptures, and assemblages. After careers in medical social work, and later practicing law, in her mid-fifties she reinvented herself as a self-taught fiber, textile, wearable, and assemblage artist.
Since 2023, MartyO has been a member of California Fibers, a prestigious and highly selective organization with only 27 members founded in 1970 for contemporary Southern California fiber artists committed to artistic growth and professional advancement. She exhibits nationally and internationally. Solo exhibitions include: A Splendid Decennium: Victorian to Vanguard – The Art of MartyO at the Gaslamp Museum and the Villa Montezuma Museum
MartyO has exhibited her work in museums and textile art shows and has received innumerable awards, including three Best of Show, three First Place, three Viewer’s Choice, and a Grand Prize.
MartyO exhibits and teaches nationally and internationally. Her work has inspired other artist to use unwanted textiles in their own creations. Drawing upon her professional training and family history, MartyO brings a deep awareness of labor, loss, and resilience into her art.
